We are recruiting for a Laboratory Technician to join our expanding canola crushing operations in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. Reporting directly to the Quality and Food Safety Laboratory Supervisor, this position will perform analytical testing in the Quality Control Laboratory which includes the testing of raw materials, intermediate, and finished products, maintains laboratory equipment, and sustains Good Laboratory Practices. Other responsibilities include:

  • Test as per the site’s sample analysis plan.
  • Perform chemical, physical, and sensory analysis on products.
  • Prepare testing solutions.
  • Order chemicals and consumables.
  • Maintain the calibration and verification program and routine maintenance programs for all test equipment.
  • Ensure the accuracy of results, the performance and integrity of the test equipment.
  • Assist in the updating or creation of test methods.
  • Maintain the collection and storage of samples.
  • Maintain the inventory of chemicals and consumables.
  • Accurately record data and task information.
  • Generate Certificate of Analysis.
  • Report quality variation to the Laboratory Supervisor and operations team.
  • Work directly with plant personnel to resolve product quality issues and assist in problem solving.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Must have relevant completed post-secondary education (Chemistry or Food Science) 
  • Prior experience in analytical laboratory as a lab tech/analyst or in a related role within the last 5 years is required; this can include internships and academic research experience.
  • Must have understanding of good laboratory practices (GLP).
  • Must have a strong understanding of chemical principles and laboratory techniques.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Understanding of ISO9001 or ISO17025
  • Understanding the concepts and use of ICP, gas chromatography, NIR/NMR.
  • Familiarity Laboratory Management standards (i.e., ISO17025)
  • Familiarity with AOCS, ASTM, AOCS methods

  • Able to handle multiple tasks with accuracy and prioritize workload.
  • Works independently and in a team environment.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Able to interpret data to make decisions.
  • Must be detail-oriented, resourceful and proactive.

 

Equipment and Software Used:

  • Laboratory equipment includes gas chromatograph, pH-meter, scales, Karl Fisher, ICP, NIR, Lovibond, Rancimat, Soxtec
  • Standard office equipment.
  • Microsoft Office 365 applications (i.e., Excel, MS Word, SharePoint, Teams).

 

Working Conditions: 

  • Personal protective equipment worn as required.
  • Laboratory and offices are in a climate-controlled environment.
  • Occasional exposure to dust, odors, vibrations, and loud noise
  • Able to walk multiple floors of stairs daily.
  • Working at heights for sampling protocols.

 

Decision Making and Accountability:

  • Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive analysis or to respond to analytical emergencies.
  • Works independently on responsibilities and will consult with the Laboratory Supervisor on any problems and or unusual test results.

 

Quality and Food Safety Program:

  • Maintains good working knowledge of program policies and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to. 
  • Participate of the site’s Food Safety Team.
  • Receive training in all aspects associated with the jobs and tasks prior to executing them.
