Overall Purpose and Objective of Position

This position provides leadership and direction to the maintenance team of an export grain elevator.  Primary function is to ensure the optimum performance of the maintenance team, and that all maintenance processes are performed in a safe, efficient manner.

  • Leads the safety effort within the maintenance department, and ensures that the maintenance team follows the established LDC safety processes pertaining to maintenance and repairs.
  • Leads the Commitment to ZERO 365 culture and actively uses the learnings of the safety training. 
  • Develops cascading departmental goals in support of the site goals, along with individual goals for direct reports.  Leads the maintenance staff and sets clear expectations, with reinforcement, for the department supervisors and superintendents.
  • Mentors, coaches, and empowers team to improve.  Encourages contribution from all team members.  Lead changes and improvement initiatives. 
  • Fosters open communication, transactional transparency, and operational discipline within the department and on its reliability processes.
  • Fosters a culture of continuous improvement with the maintenance department and for daily maintenance activities.  Works with the Plant Manager and the North America (NAM) Reliability Lead to eliminate barriers that prevent progress, innovation and improvement within the department.
  • Provides monthly reports on the performance of the department.
  • Understands reliability KPI’s, reliability leading and lagging indicators.  Lead the plant reliability program via the implementation of reliability best practices, including KPI’s monitoring, PM and PdM, RCA, Bad Actor program, Planning and Scheduling, skills assessment and training.
  • Maintains control of the overall maintenance OPEX spending and budget.
  • Manages the maintenance CAPEX budget 
  • Plans, coordinates and controls operational outages to minimize OEE and costs. 
  • Responds to equipment issues or alarms and leads investigations as necessary
  • Maintains records on maintenance, production, attendance and payroll for staff working within the Maintenance Shop
  • Oversees the CMMS – work orders, parts inventory, etc.
  • Ensures proper departmental staffing levels and ensures that workers have received the appropriate training for the performance of their particular job duties.
  • Frequently interfaces with the maintenance staff and outside contractors as needed
  • Develops and maintains a strong network of vendors/contractors that can assist in all aspects of the maintenance of facility
  • Manages planning and execution of complete or partial plant shutdowns effectively.

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Develops and implements an electronic preventative maintenance program to keep elevator equipment functioning at peak efficiency 
  • Oversees ordering/acquiring of the necessary parts and materials to support equipment repairs and the coordination of repair efforts with the Elevator Superintendent 
  • Develops mechanical specifications and details necessary to seek and award the contracting of maintenance work to third parties;  Supervises third party contractors performing maintenance repairs within the facility.
  • Responds to human resources – related issues within the Maintenance Shop, consulting with the Elevator Superintendent when necessary

 

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

Basic qualification: 

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • CMRP desired

Preferred qualification: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Vocational or Technical School related to maintaining industrial equipment

Experience

Basic qualifications: 

  • Eight (8) years of PROVEN supervisory/management experience in the maintenance of industrial equipment.
  • Must have a strong record of successfully implementing effective preventative maintenance practices and procedures

Preferred qualification:

  • Direct experience in physically performing maintenance work and repairs (e.g., a mechanic or millwright)

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

Basic qualifications:

  • Broad knowledge of maintaining operating equipment/industrial machinery, including preventive maintenance programs, repair techniques and equipment replacement options (specific knowledge of grain elevator facilities and equipment preferred)
  • Familiarity with PM and PdM best practices
  • Utilization of KPI to monitor the performance of the reliability program
  • Lead the effort around the elimination of repetitive failures by using data and RCA methodologies
  • Ability to withstand extended periods of walking and standing
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at extended heights of 175 feet, manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing, and move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more, which requires regular bending and lifting. 
  • Manage confined space entry, hot work, electric tool and lockout tag out (LOTO) permits
  • Understanding of lock out/tag out procedure
  • Demonstrate skills of team building and conflict resolution
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with conveying equipment, bulk handling, hydraulics and dust systems
  • Knowledge of the regulatory requirements that the grain elevator operates under (e.g., OSHA, EPA, USDA)
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints

Equipment Used

  • Typical office equipment: PC, telephone, fax machine
  • Use of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required
  • Industrial machinery and grain elevator operating equipment
  • Use of electrical tools and testing equipment

 

Working Conditions

  • Off-shift call-in requirements when needed.  Extensions of regular working hours are necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training, or to respond to emergencies. Depending on business conditions and seasonal demands night, weekend, and holiday work is not uncommon. Frequent visits to industrial operation areas are necessary with exposure to a variety of temperatures, prevailing weather conditions, and some exposure to chemicals, gases, vapors, dust, odors and flammable liquids. There will be occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise. Position will require some stair climbing. Work is sometimes above ground level. 

 

Employee Supervision

  • This position supervises a team of approximately five to ten maintenance personnel, plus other mechanical and electrical contractors as necessary for large projects.  At some locations this position may also supervise and Assistant Maintenance Superintendent and/or Maintenance Planner.
  • Has the authority to recommend hiring, firing, & discipline of employees as well as supervise, manage, & direct work.

 

Decision Making/Accountability

  • Plans, develops and implements methods to improve operations, minimize operating costs to more effectively utilize labor and materials.  Broad authority to make appropriate determinations within scope of maintenance functions, such as selecting/scheduling contractors, determining whether to replace or refurbish parts/equipment, schedules preventive maintenance as necessary.  Authority to shut down plant machinery, systems and operations or take equipment out of service when unsafe conditions are recognized or when further operation will pose a risk.  Errors in judgment can have detrimental effects on plant integrity/safety and profitability.  Helps establish and adjust repair and maintenance budget.  Approves purchase orders/invoices for equipment and tools.  Accountable for maintaining required certifications and complying with regulatory maintenance and safety standards. Some locations work under a local union contract.  This requires consistent implementation of the contract as it relates to working with the maintenance crews and keeping the facility operational.
