The Site Food Safety and Quality Manager will have direct responsibility to oversee and lead the Food Safety and Quality function and programs for all facilities within Yorkton Processing, which includes the existing Canola Crushing operations, expansion of the Canola Crushing operations (to be completed in 2025), as well as the construction of the Pea Protein Isolate Production Plant (also to be completed in 2025). 

This position will lead certification efforts, build a workforce culture of food safety and quality while assisting the facility in achieving overall organizational goals, ensure facility follows FSSC22000 and implements changes in the plant as necessary.  The Food Safety and Quality Manager ensures the facility follows federal, provincial, and exporting countries' food and feed regulations, and customer requirements. 

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Ensure the processing and distribution of food and feed products follow domestic and international regulations such as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, US Food and Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act, and the European Union.
  • Establish and implement food and feed safety plans following regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain product specification sheets and feed labels.
  • Develop, implement, and sustain FSSC22000 requirements across the operation.
  • Lead on-site FSSC22000 certification, customer, regulatory, and product certification audits such as Halal and Kosher.
  • Prepare, monitor, and report facility Food Safety and Quality KPIs and objectives.
  • Serve as a liaison between sales and external customers on technical questions related to product quality and food safety.
  • Provide feedback to customers on product specifications and quality requirements.
  • Support Regional FSQ in the completion  food safety and quality program questionnaires and statements
  • Coordinate product analysis to support the food safety plan or fulfill customer mandated statements.
  • Investigate product non-conformances. Lead root cause analysis and follow up on CAPA completion.
  • Prepare CAPEX or AI project proposal as necessary to improve the quality and food safety programs.
  • Oversee work instructions for processes for which operators are responsible and relate directly or indirectly to quality and food safety.
  • Site document control coordinator for quality and food safety management system procedures and records and operation work instructions.
  • Perform or coordinate food safety related training to employees and management team.
  • Support the Food Safety and Quality Laboratory Supervisor and quality team by providing resources necessary to ensure optimal operation of the QC and operations laboratories.
  • Perform other duties as assigned Regional Director of Quality.

 

Decision Making and Accountability

  • Develop, implement, and monitor the food safety program to assure compliance with the CFIA Regulations implementing the Safe Food for Canadians Act and US FDA Regulations implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act.
  • Complies with governmental and company policies, regulations, and standards to ensure compliance.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of program strategies that improve the quality and food safety of products produced. 
  • Works independently on responsibilities and will consult with the Regional Director of Quality as needed.

 

Minimum required Education and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in food science, microbiology, chemistry or other science-related field.
  • Experience: In food manufacturing facility (2-5 years)
  • Certifications: Preventive Controls Qualified Individual- Human Food, Food Defense Qualified Individual
  • Strong and current knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices, HACCP, Food Safety Modernization Act, and Safe Foods for Canadians Regulations, CODEX, EU
  • Working knowledge of recognized GFSI benchmarked certification schemes (FSSC22000, BRC, SQF)

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO9001, ISO17025)
  • Knowledge of published methods (AOAC, AOCS, ASTMS)
  • Knowledge and understanding of microbiology in relation to food safety.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills in working with people and managing projects.
  • Broad knowledge of plant production processes, procedures and equipment

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Understanding of laboratory equipment such as GC, Karl-Fischer, ICP, tintometer, fat extractor, protein analyzer, Rancimat, coulometer, and NIR
  • Fluent in English verbal, reading, and writing skills.
  • Able to write clear procedures or policies.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner both written and verbal
  • Ability to oversee and direct the work of others in a team environment
