Overall Purpose and Objective of Position

This position plans, supervises and directs the maintenance and repair of industrial equipment for a soybean crushing, RBD Oil Refinery and Packaging plants as well all the equipment and utilities services for all areas outside the process areas. This position will work independently with supervision to help develop and support the goals and strategies of LDC and the facility.  Primary functions are to maximize productivity and product quality while minimizing costs and to ensure compliance with environmental, occupational health and safety regulations and best practices. 

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Develops, maintains, and applies consistent maintenance and reliability best practices
  • Ensure all applicable government regulations are met at all times, gives input to safety performance analysis and improvements and actively participate into incident analysis
  • Manage our Predictive Maintenance system and drive Maintenance towards Reliability Centered Maintenance culture
  • Leads the deployment of maintenance related Reliability Excellence processes across more complex plant and ensures the reliability culture is foundational to operations. Enforces common reliability processes and metrics (focus on reliability improvement, eliminating the root-cause of reliability problems, etc) to achieve targeted results from continuous improvement practices, and validates the importance of Reliability Excellence through key successes (KPI’s, metrics control, total cost of maintenance, total cost of ownership, review of compliance audits, etc)
  • Maintain proper coverage by managing the maintenance staffing schedules
  • Make improvements to the process as necessary to maximize efficiency, increase product quality and/or lower costs
  • Serve as the liaison between the Plant Manager and the maintenance staff
  • Notify the Plant Manager of potential safety hazards, equipment failures, operational inconsistencies and employee incidents
  • Lead Annual Shutdowns of the plant being responsible for Budget and coordination of all activities related with maintenance annual shutdown
  • Directing of the daily activities of maintenance staff to ensure the safe and efficient servicing of plant equipment utilizing SAP program Plans and manages maintenance budget to meet facility needs and production goals
  • Plans, coordinates and controls plant outages to minimize downtime and cost
  • Supports design, planning and execution of CAPEX projects
  • Coach staff on the Company’s performance expectations and provide on-going performance feedback
  • Establish and maintain a spare parts inventory management system
  • Establish and improve the Preventive Maintenance program
  • Assist in site construction management whenever needed. 
  • Ensure that project goals are met. 
  • Prepare the new projects for commissioning and startup
  • Develop training and operating procedures as needed / directed
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and discharge staff as needed.
  • Direct and coordinate all maintenance activities with production management.
  • Review operations and confer with technical or administrative resources to resolve production opportunities, improve efficiency, or otherwise reduce cost
  • Responsible for closing the maintenance related gaps from audits.
  • Accountable for a proper planning (Job Plan) of the preventive and predictive maintenance activities as under responsibility of the Maintenance planner and accountable for a proper scheduling and according to execution of predictive and preventive maintenance activities as under responsibility of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Reporting and Communication:

  • Provides routine and consistent feedback to associates
  • Collects, records and analyzes production and downtime data to optimize efficiencies and product quality
  • Maintains SAP system to utilize Work Orders and Requisitions to ensure the efficient and timely maintenance of plant equipment
  • Notifies the Plant Manager of potential safety hazards, equipment failures, operational inconsistencies and employee incidents

Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) Responsibilities

  • Is an active member of the facility SHE Program
  • Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to
  • Ensures employees are provided required training for area assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work
  • Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner
  • Ensures unsafe working conditions are remedied as soon as practicable

  • Interior office work is in a typical climate-controlled office environment
  • Frequent visits to industrial operations areas are necessary with exposure to variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions
  • Regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust, odors and flammable liquids
  • Occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise
  • Some stair climbing and heavy lifting is required.  Work is sometimes above ground level
  • Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or to respond to emergencies

Employee Supervision

  • This position supervises a team of approximately ten to twenty maintenance personnel and has the authority to recommend hiring, firing, & discipline of employees as well as supervise, manage, & direct work.

Decision Making/Accountability

  • Plans and controls the entire maintenance function of a soybean crushing, refinery and packaging
  • Is accountable, with operational and engineering and commercial stakeholders, for the overall effectiveness and efficiency of plant operating equipment
  • Develops programs and policies to optimize the performance of plant operating equipment
  • Plans and allocates the work of maintenance personnel to achieve daily production goals
  • Investigates and resolves any operating equipment issues
  • Initiates plant start-ups and shutdowns as needed

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

Basic qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (Mechanical, Electrical) with a preference for Mechanical Engineering degree

Preferred qualifications:

  • Technical degree or trade/mechanical training related to the operation and maintenance of industrial equipment

Experience

  • Prior experience in implementation/execution of predictive /reliability maintenance programs in an industrial plant
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience leading a maintenance function in an industrial setting with experience on the Crushing, Biodiesel and Refinery of edible oils process being preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

  • Broad knowledge of maintaining plant equipment/industrial machinery is required
  • Knowledge of solvent extraction operations preferred
  • Knowledge of Process Safety Management preferred
  • Knowledge of the regulatory requirements the facility operates under (e.g., OSHA, EPA, USDA) preferred
  • Knowledge of PLC, Instrumentation, Ladder Logic, MCC’s and electrical systems is preferred
  • Ability to read blueprints and/or other plant diagrams
  • Ability to withstand extended periods of walking and standing
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel
